About Our Medical Detox Program

Before beginning medical detox, we conduct a thorough assessment of each patient’s substance use, physical and mental health, and any co-occurring conditions. This allows us to create a tailored treatment plan.

At The Recovery Village Indianapolis, patients undergo detox in comfortable, private rooms with around-the-clock medical supervision. We provide medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms as needed, along with nutritious meals to support overall health. Additionally, patients may start individual counseling check-ins with their licensed therapist during this time.

  • A safe, substance-free environment

  • 24/7 medical monitoring

  • Treatment for withdrawal symptoms

  • Medication-assisted treatment (when appropriate)

Due to the uniqueness of each patient, The Recovery Village prioritizes personalized care by meticulously tailoring all medical detox treatment plans to suit individual needs. Before starting the medical detox process, a member of our 24-hour nursing team engages with each new resident to gain a comprehensive understanding of their condition.

This initial assessment may encompass various components, including:

  • Personalized assessment
  • Drug and alcohol screening
  • Co-occurring disorders evaluation
  • Comprehensive medical assessment
  • Psychological assessment
  • Risk assessment
  • Social assessment

Upon completion of this assessment, patients embark on the detoxification journey at our inpatient medical detox center. While the average duration of medical detox typically spans five to ten days, it’s crucial to acknowledge that each case is unique. For some, the process may extend longer, while for others, it may be shorter. Generally, it constitutes one of the most challenging phases of the recovery journey.

As detoxification commences, withdrawal symptoms and cravings for drugs or alcohol swiftly manifest. The intensity, duration, and diversity of these symptoms may vary for each individual, contingent upon factors such as the type and quantity of substances used, duration of addiction, family history, biochemistry, and presence of co-occurring conditions. Withdrawal symptoms range from mild inconveniences like headaches, mood fluctuations, and irritability to more severe manifestations such as tremors, vomiting, and muscle tension.

Is medical detox necessary?

Detox is typically essential for your recovery if you’re dependent on substances like:

  • Alcohol
  • Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin, and Ativan)
  • Prescription opioids (Fentanyl, carfentanil, oxycodone, tramadol, Percocet, Vicodin, OxyContin, and Suboxone)
  • Heroin
  • Stimulants (Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse, Concerta, and ecstasy)
  • Sleeping medications (Ambien, Halcion, and Lunesta)

How long is medical detox?

The duration of detox varies based on factors such as the substance used, withdrawal symptoms, and overall physical health. Typically, the medically supervised detox period lasts around 7–10 days for most patients.

Can I detox at home?

It’s not advisable to detox at home. Withdrawal can be uncomfortable and demotivating, increasing the risk of relapse. In particular, alcohol and benzodiazepines can have withdrawal symptoms that may be life-threatening without immediate medical care.

Will I receive methadone, suboxone, etc. during detox?

The Recovery Village Indianapolis provides medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when medically appropriate. Your clinical team will assess your needs and eligibility for MAT.

Will I lose my job if I attend medical detox?

Several laws are in place that protect employees when they attend detox and rehab.

How can I pay for medical detox?

Insurance coverage may offset some or all of the expenses related to medical detox. If you lack insurance, The Recovery Village Indianapolis can explore alternative payment options with you.
